Rain and wind did not stop people from attending the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new University of Tennessee Medical Center’s mobile mammography unit. UT Medical Center employees and guest speaker State Attorney General Paul Summers shared in celebrating the development of the new unit, received refreshments and had the opportunity to tour the unit and meet the staff including Pat Weaver, unit driver, and Kathy Coppenger, mammography radiology technologist.

The state-of-the-art mobile mammography unit expands the frontier of medicine and takes the Medical Center’s care on the road to serve women who need access to mobile mammography and cancer information that can save their lives.

The new unit, decked out in UT Medical Center colors (orange and white), provides women across East Tennessee access to mammography services in their community. The mobile mammography unit was purchased as a result of funding from a statewide Tennessee Women’s Health Initiative grant and other gifts. Custom built from the chassis up by Farber Specialty Vehicles in Columbus, Ohio, the new unit features a mammography suite equipped with the leading edge Lorad M-IV Platinum mammography system. A fully equipped examination room is on board for access to clinical breast examinations as well as other clinical and health services. The unit is handicapped accessible and meets all requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
