Muscular Dystrophy Clinic
The Muscular Dystrophy Clinic at Cole Neuroscience Center is partially funded by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Dr. Brian Wiseman, neurologist, conducts the clinic each month.
Muscular Dystrophy (MD) actually is 30 genetic diseases, all characterized by muscular weakness and degeneration of varying degrees and affecting different parts of the body. Some forms of MD are seen in infancy or childhood, while others may not appear until middle age or later. The disorders differ in terms of the distribution and extent of muscle weakness (some forms of Muscular Dystrophy also affect cardiac muscle), age of onset, rate of progression and pattern of inheritance.
Patients are seen in a multi-disciplinary setting, attended by a neurologist, respiratory therapy, nurse, social worker and medical equipment providers. Speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy and nutritional support also are available. The goal of all of these disciplines is for patients to maintain as much function and independence as long as possible.
