A variety of other diseases and conditions can cause dementia. These include:

  • Multi-infarct dementia: Patients with multi-infarct dementia have had a series of small strokes that have destroyed enough brain tissue to cause dementia. The key symptom of the disorder is small, step-by-step deterioration of mental ability. This form of dementia is more common in men. Treatment for multi-infarct dementia revolves around preventing further strokes. Sometimes, dementia is caused by a combination of multi-infarct dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Static dementia: As its name suggests, static dementia is not progressive and usually follows a brain injury, cardiac arrest or cerebral hemorrhage.
  • Pseudodementia: This form of dementia is treatable - it's a symptom of an underlying disorder or chemical imbalance. It can occur in people with schizophrenia or personality disorders, as well as those taking large amounts of sedatives or other medications. Pseudodementia can also be caused by depression, chemical imbalances or drug reactions.
