3 Ways to detect colorectal cancer early

Overall, colorectal cancer accounts for a third of all new cases of cancer diagnosed and is the third leading cause of cancer deaths (just behind breast cancer and prostate cancer). In Tennessee, 1,190 deaths from colorectal cancer are projected in 2010. Unfortunately in Tennessee, less than 50% of the age appropriate population is screened for colorectal cancer. When colorectal cancer is detected at an early stage and treated, the five-year survival rate climbs to 90%.

New Endoscopy Center
In observance of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month (March), the University of Tennessee Medical Center will host an open house to provide information on the benefits of screening colonoscopy and provide tours of the new state-of-the-art Endoscopy Center. Community members are invited to join us on March 24 from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. for a tour of the new all private endoscopy suite, meet our experts in the field of gastroenterology and enjoy light refreshments.

Colonoscopy Screenings
On March 26, the medical center will offer Saturday colonoscopy screenings for those who have difficulties scheduling this potentially lifesaving screening during their busy work week. As a result of the Affordable Care Act, many insurance providers waive the deductible and coinsurance/copayment for preventative services such as screening colonoscopy. If you are 50 or older or have a family history, contact your insurance company to see if you are eligible for this benefit. To register for the special Saturday colonoscopy screening, please call 865.305.6970.

Gastrointestinal Tumor Service
UT Medical Center also is pleased to announce the opening of the newly established gastrointestinal multidisciplinary cancer service that opened in October 2010. The Gastrointestinal Tumor Service or GITS program is a comprehensive service that provides access to an entire team of oncology specialists who diagnose and treat gastrointestinal cancers including those of the esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, colon, rectum and all other areas in the gastrointestinal tract.

One call to the GITS nurse navigator by the patient or referring physician will result in the patient being seen by the appropriate specialist within 5 business days. Each individual patient case will be presented and discussed by our team of experts at the weekly multi-disciplinary Tumor Conference. All services will be arranged in a prompt manner to expedite the care of the patient who may have cancer or a confirmed cancer diagnosis. Along the way, support and education is offered to patients and their families by the nurse navigator. The GITS nurse navigator can be reached by calling 865.305.GITS (4487).
