Goals
- Patient with an abnormal mammogram or breast lump are evaluated within two business days by a physician specializing in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
- Patients are evaluated by a specialized multidisciplinary team (i.e., surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists, imaging specialists, plastic surgeons, pathologists, nurses, social workers and counselors, and rehabilitation therapists).
- Patients are cared for by physicians who are experienced in the treatment of breast cancer.
- Patients have the best care and treatment possible (i.e., the hospital meets standards approved by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons).
- Patients participate directly in the decision making process about their care and treatment as an equal partner of the healthcare team.
- Patients are informed about their diagnosis and treatment options from their very first appointments.
- Family members are encouraged to take part in supporting the patient both physically and emotionally and to participate with t he patient in educational sessions.
- Patients have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials (i.e., diagnostic and treatment studies)
- Patients are medically and surgically managed with every effort to prevent or minimize side effects of breast cancer treatments.
- Patients are encouraged to express their opinions openly, freely, and be heard, including concerns and recommendations for improving care or services.
- Patients, upon request, are teamed with previously diagnosed breast cancer patients to obtain answers to candid questions, and for ongoing emotional support.
- Patients are provided effective continuity of care including timely communication between the Breast Care Service physicians and the patients' referring physicians and other healthcare providers.
- Patients' urgent care needs are effectively addressed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Patients (current and former) are involved with ongoing educational programs about breast cancer treatments, survivorship issues, new discoveries, and the latest in clinical management.
- Patients are encouraged to utilize resources to help with image recovery, improving and rebuilding self-image and self-esteem aiming to restore the patient's health status, including their emotional well-being.
Patient Expectations
- Provide the Breast Care Service with complete information about previous and existing medical history, and psychological needs.
- Read educational material and ask questions.
- Follow-up with appointments and recommendations.
- Openly express worries and concerns.
- Include at least one close friend or family member in the care process and bring that person for each appointment (if possible).
