University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine
UT Medical Center serves as the clinical education site of the UT Graduate School of Medicine, which manages all residency, fellowship and subspecialty programs in association with the UT College of Medicine and Dentistry. Additionally, the hospital serves as a clinical education site for the UT College of Pharmacy. The Graduate School of Medicine offers accredited residency programs in 11 disciplines, plus a transitional year program. Fellowships are offered in sports medicine, vascular surgery, trauma/critical care, behavioral medicine, geriatric medicine, family and emergency medicine, cyto and surgical pathology and advanced obstetrics. Annually, approximately 170 residents are in training at UT Medical Center.
Research is an important part of the UHS mission. Researchers are involved in basic and clinical research and clinical trials. Primary research areas include vascular endothelial biology, immunology, oncology, amyloid-related disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, nutrition and trauma.
University Physicians' Association Inc. (UPA)
The UPA is an independent physician association affiliated with UHS. The association is comprised of 333 primary care and specialty care physicians and affiliates located in nine counties within the medical center’s service area. UPA is committed to participate in an integrated healthcare delivery system with UHS. Currently, UPA participates in 11 managed care contracts with UHS and manages the healthcare of more than 15,000 members.
Dynacare – Tennessee
The clinical laboratory provides services to UT Medical Center and physicians, hospitals and businesses in East Tennessee and parts of Kentucky and Virginia. Dynacare – Tennessee, a laboratory partnership with the UHS, operates the clinical laboratories, and University Pathologists P.C. provides professional pathology services, clinical oversight and medical direction. The facilities occupy approximately 58,000 square feet—much of it newly constructed or renovated space. The clinical laboratory provides diagnostic and therapeutic support for comprehensive specialty and subspecialty services through a staff of approximately 150 professionals.
Volunteer Research Group LLC (VRG)
Volunteer Research Group is a full service, private clinical research site affiliated with UT Medical Center. VRG is dedicated to excellence in the care of patients and volunteers who enroll in pharmaceutical-sponsored Phase II, III and IV clinical research trials. VRG is a unique joint venture with UHS Ventures Inc., University Physicians’ Association Inc. and the New Orleans Center for Clinical Research.
Volunteer Research Group participates in a wide variety of pharmaceutical trials with a potential physician base of greater than 500 university physicians in various specialty and sub-specialty areas for participation as clinical investigators.
Affiliations
Both formal and informal affiliation agreements exist between UT Medical Center and other area healthcare institutions. Each agreement is designed to meet the needs of each individual institution following an appropriate needs assessment. Informal arrangements may include telemedicine, physician specialty services, physician recruitment issues and responding to specific local needs.
