Phase I Construction
Purpose: The purpose of Phase I construction of the new Heart Hospital allows the University of Tennessee Medical Center the adaptability to meet the increased demand for its services. By adding additional space, renovating current space and hiring additional hospital staff, the medical center is poised to meet the needs of its increasingly tremendous growth. The new Heart Hospital is dedicated to serving the inpatient needs of cardiovascular and pulmonary patients within the Heart Lung Vascular Institute. Construction of heart hospital is first step in a five-year plan for medical center to meet increasing patient volumes.
New Construction Begins: July 24, 2008, with the groundbreaking ceremony. Multi-year build-out plan to allow medical center to meet current and future community needs.

Facility Use: Heart Hospital to provide medical services that meet the needs of its heart patients.

Renovated Space: 9,000 square feet
Features: Beautiful atrium area, easy access to Endoscopy and MRI registration, larger and renovated Endoscopy Department, new information desk, library access, private-room cardiovascular intensive care unit, new surgery waiting area, new cardiovascular intensive care family lounge and nursing alcoves outside patient rooms.
Construction and rennovations expand the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit from 18 beds to 24 private-room beds. The new 24-bed private room cardiovascular intensive care unit will offer patients' families space to visit and take part in the care of their loved ones. Each room will have a bath and restroom facilities, television and sofa. The sofa will convert to a one-person bed for overnight stays by a family member.
The strategically planned construction will result in close proximity of cardiovascular and pulmonary care, including cardiovascular intensive care unit, cardiac catheterization center, operating rooms, emergency department and UT LIFESTAR.
Expected Phase I Completion: early 2010
Future Plans: Phase II will provide the heart hospital with four more floors (8 total) and will be completed at a later date. The construction could potentially create 53 more beds.
Other Hospital Facts
- Heart Lung Vascular Institute established at medical center in 2000.
- Heart Lung Vascular Institute outpatient building opened in 2004.
- When it opens, the heart hospital will mark the first new inpatient building constructed at The University of Tennessee Medical Center in a quarter of a century. The 12-story East Tower opened on the medical center’s campus in 1984.
