Cancer Imaging and Tracer Development
The Cancer Institute is home to the Cancer Imaging and Tracer Development Research Program. This is a partnership between the Cancer Institute, CTI Molecular Imaging, PET/NET Pharmaceutical and the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine. Research is led by David Townsend, Ph.D., the co-inventor of the PET/CT. Townsend, with funding from the National Cancer Institute, designs and develops advanced PET/CT scanning, which is the most advanced imaging modality for tumors and tumor growth. Townsend’s research will continue to enhance our ability to diagnose and stage cancer.

Townsend's associates collaborate with industry and other cancer researchers to develop new tracers that will enhance the precision and scope of PET/CT imaging. These new tracers will increase the types of cancers that can be precisely visualized and scanned for diagnostic and monitoring purposes.

Clinical Trials
Collaborating with other researchers, the NCI and various pharmaceutical companies, the Cancer Institute has available new cancer treatments under evaluation.  The Cancer Institute is a participant with the Southwest Oncology Group member institution.
