Without donations from people like you, many of the advances patients receive today would never have been developed. Knowing that you helped find solutions for many health problems is an immensely rewarding gift of love.
Most people think of Emergency Medicine as being similar to the TV show “ER.” In some ways it is. You have a caring, committed, hard working medical, nursing and support staff. You have lots of patients involved with different types and degrees of injury and illness. And you have the race against the clock.
Unlike the TV show, which solves all of its patient care problems within the framework of a one-hour program, Emergency and Trauma Services at UT Medical Center operates around the clock, 365 days a year. One reason this “ER” is so busy comes from UT Medical Center’s designation as a Level I trauma center. The most severely injured are brought in by ambulance or LIFESTAR medical helicopter service. Last year, more than 47,000 children and adults were treated by a staff that knows the true meaning of the word “teamwork.”
To help in its mission to provide top medical services and patient care around the clock, Emergency and Trauma Services offers the following ways to give gifts as well as specific departmental gift funds.

UT Medical Center touches many lives through its two entities: University Memorial Hospital (patient care) and the UT Graduate School of Medicine (teaching, research and public service). These crucial components embody a philosophy and mission focused on the spirit of exploration (disease research), the passion for teaching (resident, fellowship and allied health training) and the compassion to restore (more than 200,000 inpatient and outpatient visits per year).
Emergency and Trauma services receive no state-appropriated dollars for patient care. The various education, research and public service programs within The Graduate School of Medicine are the recipients of less than 10 percent in state appropriated dollars.
Charitable gifts make the difference! The normal budget cycle to allow for the purchase of a new monitor may take a year or more. The opportunity to bring in an outside speaker to talk with medical staff and nursing professionals about the latest techniques in open-wound treatment is not provided for by budgeted dollars. Grants and your contributions make these happen.

Gifts can be designated to a specific area of interest within the Department of Emergency Medicine (patient care, teaching, research) and also can be given to further the overall excellence of other programs within UT Medical Center.
Several ways you can give a gift include the following.
- Outright gifts by check, cash, credit card or payroll deduction (employees of University Health System and the University of Tennessee) .
- Outright gifts using appreciated securities or property which can provide significant capital gains tax savings.
- Gifts in memory of or to honor a loved one represent a special way to say you care and you remember.
- Bequests in your will can be designated to benefit the Emergency’s (and the medical center's) three-fold mission of patient care, education and discovery by designating a percentage or specific amount from your estate. These gifts also result in estate tax savings.
- Gifts providing an income to you for your lifetime while also giving you a substantial initial charitable deduction. Charitable trusts and annuities represent a true “win-win” situation. Contact us for details.
- Named endowments, gift funds, professorships and lectureships are gifts that keep on giving. These are investments that provide money to be used for the purpose(s) established by the donor. An ongoing source of funds can have a lasting impact and, thus shape the future course of patient care, medical education and research. These gifts can be funded by cash, appreciated securities or property or be created through a will, trust, annuity or other estate planning technique. They can be named by the donor to honor/memorialize a loved one, family name, etc.

To support excellence in Emergency and Trauma Services’ patient care programs and its related teaching and research initiatives through the UT Graduate School of Medicine, several gift funds and endowments have been created. These funds allow the donor to support a particular area. They include but are not limited to the following.

- Unrestricted contributions allow us to fund programs where the need arises.
