Department of Pharmacy Mission
The Department of Pharmacy operates to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of our patients and contribute to achieving the objectives of the Medical Center by

PGY1 Pharmacy Residency (6 positions/year)
Purpose and Outcomes
Pharmacists completing the PGY1 residency will be prepared to practice as pharmacist clinicians in a variety of patient care settings, to qualify for adjunct faculty positions at a college of pharmacy, and pursue PGY2 or fellowship training in their area of choice. They will have demonstrated competency as evidenced by their ability to:
- Manage and improve the medication-use process
- Provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams
- Exercise leadership and practice management skills
- Demonstrate project management skills
- Provide medication and practice-related education/training
- Utilize medical informatics
- Participate in the management of medical emergencies
Description
This program is a one year ASHP-accredited residency designed to enable pharmacists to develop strong foundational pharmacotherapy, operational, and practice management skills enabling them to progress towards personal goals. PGY1 residents will refine these skills via a well-established integrated clinical practice model. Required rotations and experiences include: internal medicine, infectious disease, critical care medicine, trauma surgery, transplant, practice management/medication safety, hospital pharmacy practice, drug information/drug use policy, student precepting, and the completion of a project. Electives include cardiology, pulmonary medicine, oncology, neonatology,
family medicine, and pediatrics.

PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Ambulatory Care (1- 2 position/year)
Purpose and Outcomes
Pharmacists completing the PGY2 pharmacy residency in ambulatory care will be prepared for advanced practice ambulatory care or family medicine positions with the ability to qualify for faculty positions at a college of pharmacy. They will have achieved advanced competencies in ambulatory care and family medicine as evidenced by the following:
- Establish a collaborative interdisciplinary practice
- In a collaborative interdisciplinary ambulatory practice provide efficient, effective, evidence-based, patient-centered treatment for chronic and/or acute illness in all degrees of complexity
- Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills
- Promote health improvement, wellness, and disease prevention
- Demonstrate excellence in the provision of training or educational activities for health care professionals and health care professionals in training
- Serve as an authoritative resource on the optimal use of medications
- In the integrated care practice of family medicine, provide efficient, effective, evidence-based, patient-centered treatment for chronic and/or acute illnesses in all degrees of complexity to hospitalized patients
Description
This program is a one year ASHP-accredited residency designed to build on the foundational skills gained during the PGY1 residency year. Residents will refine their skills in the ambulatory care environment via pharmacist managed clinic models as well as interdisciplinary office practices and disease management/wellness programs. Residents will practice with an increased level of autonomy and responsibility for managing patient care practices as well as overseeing pharmacy students and residents. Required components of the program include hospital based and private office practice, family medicine, practice management, and the completion of a project. Multiple teaching opportunities are also available. Completion of an accredited PGY1 residency is required.

PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Critical Care (1 position/year)
Purpose and Outcomes
Pharmacists completing the PGY2 residency in critical care will be prepared for advanced practice pharmacist clinician positions with the ability to qualify for faculty positions at a college of pharmacy. They will have achieved advanced competencies in critical care as evidenced by their ability to:
- Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills
- Optimize the outcomes of critically ill patients by providing evidence-based medication therapy as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team
- Demonstrate excellence in the provision of training, including preceptorship, or educational activities for health care professionals and health care professionals in training
- Demonstrate the skills necessary to conduct a critical care pharmacy research project
- Participate in the management of medical emergencies
Description
This program is a one year ASHP-accredited residency designed to build on the foundational skills gained during the PGY1 residency year. Residents will refine their skills in the critical care environment via a well-established integrated clinical practice model with increased autonomy and responsibility for managing patient care practice and overseeing pharmacy students and PGY1 residents. The University of Tennessee Medical Center is a Level I trauma center for adults and children. Medicine and surgery/trauma critical care are required components as well as completion of a project. Elective experiences include infectious disease, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, neonatology, and oncology. Completion of an accredited PGY1 residency is required.

PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Internal Medicine (1 position/year)
Purpose and Outcomes
Pharmacists completing the PGY2 pharmacy residency in internal medicine will be prepared for advanced practice pharmacist clinician positions with the ability to qualify for faculty positions at a college of pharmacy. They will have achieved advanced competencies in internal medicine as evidenced by their ability to:
- Manage and improve the medication-use process for internal medicine patients
- Optimize the outcomes of internal medicine patients by providing evidence-based, medication therapy as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team
- Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills in the provision of care in internal medicine patients
- Demonstrate project management skills
- Provide medication and practice-related education/training in the internal medicine area
- Participate in the management of medical emergencies
Description
This program is a one year ASHP-accredited residency designed to build on the foundational skills gained during the PGY1 residency year. Residents will refine their skills in the internal medicine environment via a well-established integrated clinical practice model with increased autonomy and responsibility for managing patient care practice and overseeing pharmacy students and PGY1 residents. Internal medicine (house staff), critical care medicine, infectious disease, night shift medicine, practice management/medication safety, and completion of a project are required
components. Elective experiences include nephrology/transplant, pulmonary medicine, cardiology, emergency medicine, and oncology. Completion of an accredited PGY1 residency is required.

PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Pharmacotherapy (1-2 positions/year)
Purpose and Outcomes
Pharmacists completing the PGY2 pharmacy residency in pharmacotherapy will be prepared for advanced practice delivering pharmaceutical care to diverse inpatient and outpatient populations in a family medicine position with the ability to qualify for faculty positions at a college of pharmacy. They will have achieved advanced competencies in family medicine and academia as evidenced by the following:
- Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills
- Optimize the outcomes of diverse populations of inpatients and outpatients with varied and complex health care problems through expert provision of evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team
- Serve as an authoritative resource on the optimal use of medications
- Demonstrate excellence in the provision of training and educational activities for health care professionals, health care professionals in training and the public
- Contribute to the body of pharmacotherapy knowledge
- Demonstrate skills required to function in an academic setting
Description
This program is a one year residency designed to build on the foundational skills gained during the PGY1 residency year. Residents will refine their skills in both the inpatient and outpatient family medicine environment. Residents will practice with an increased level of autonomy and responsibility for managing patient care practices as well as overseeing pharmacy students and residents. Teaching, writing, and research skills will be enhanced to prepare for a faculty position. Opportunities for didactic, small-group, and case-based teaching are available. Required components of the program include hospital based office practice, family medicine, academia, critical care medicine, practice management, and the completion of a project. Multiple inpatient and outpatient opportunities are available as elective experiences. Completion of an accredited PGY1 residency is required. (Application for accreditation will be submitted at the beginning of training for the first resident.)
