The University of Tennessee Medical Center is a 581-bed, tertiary care facility which serves the entire East Tennessee region. UT Medical Center is a state-designated Level I trauma center supported by LIFESTAR, an aeromedical helicopter program. UT Medical Center includes a Graduate School of Medicine.

The Department of Pharmacy Services is an integral part of the College of Pharmacy at UT Memphis. An American Society of Health-System Pharmacists accredited residency in pharmacy practice is offered as well as three specialty residency programs. The Department of Pharmacy was selected as one of four implementation sites for the ASHP Residency Learning System during 1995-96. The Department of Pharmacy was also recognized by the Tennessee Society of Hospital Pharmacists (TSHP) for the Innovative Hospital Pharmacy Practice Award in 1993, and has been a training site for a parenteral products preparation and quality assurance continuing education program sponsored by the College of Pharmacy and TSHP since 1994.

The pharmacy staff provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care through seven decentralized pharmacist teams. Each of the teams include a pharmacist and a pharmacy technician and they are supported by pharmacist specialists in internal medicine, family medicine, oncology, pulmonary medicine, infectious disease, drug information, pediatrics, critical care medicine and trauma, anticoagulation, transplantation and sterile products who focus on patients with intense drug therapy needs. Additionally, satellite pharmacies are located in the operating room and oncology.

Pharmacist specialists in ambulatory care provide services to the internal medicine practice groupand the outpatient anticoagulation service.
