University of Tennessee Medical Center is a tertiary care referral facility for a population of 1.5 million people in East Tennessee, Southeastern Kentucky and Western North Carolina. The hospital is the only teaching hospital in the area and has a long history of providing comprehensive healthcare to the southeast portion of the United States.

Having served the region since 1956, its roots are deep in the community, with its primary facility in Knoxville, and satellite medial plazas throughout the region. The Medical Center serves as a referral center for adults, infants, children and adolescents for the surrounding 21 counties. The hospital is designated as the region’s Level I Trauma Center for adults and children. We care for a diversity of patient illness and maintain a large inpatient general internal medicine admission rate. We have depth and expertise in all medical subspecialties and for all surgical case types.

Through the UT Graduate School of Medicine, education and research enrich patient care services and provide an unequaled measure of excellence. Volunteer and full-time faculty conduct residency-training programs in anesthesiology, family medicine, general dentistry, general surgery, internal medicine, nuclear medicine, obstetrics, oral surgery, pathology and radiology. Many of the physicians trained at UT Medical Center remain in the area and establish medical practices throughout East Tennessee. UT Medical Center has been recognized by HCIA and The Health Network as a recipient of the 1999 “100 Top Hospitals” award in the major Teaching Hospitals category. The medical center has also been judged by the University Health Consortium as a Top Performer among 50 Trauma Centers across the nation, and named in the top 10 Telemedicine programs in the United States by Telehealth magazine.
