The Pathology Department uses a Roche Image Analysis System. Its programs are designed for the study of cells, nuclei, cytoplasm and/or nucleoli in whole cells, tissue sections, or preparations of cell components. Use of the image system allows identification and selection of structures to be studied and exclusion of those which could dilute or obscure data.
Currently, the system is utilized to quantify hormonal receptors in breast malignancies. Immunohistochemical stains are also used to determine proliferation rates of these malignancies.
DNA ploidy can be obtained by study of Feulgen-stained specimens. Ploidy of normal, dysplastic, in-situ, and invasive cells can be provided to assist in patient care. |
