^ TOP Q. Is a sleep study covered by my health insurance?

A. A key consideration may be insurance carrier reimbursement. Evaluations are ordered by your physician through the Cole Neuroscience Center at 305-8761. Doctors at the Sleep Center have training specific to sleep disorders. Many insurance carriers have special requirements before testing can begin. This also applies to treatment, which can become expensive.

^ TOP Q. What do I need to do to prepare for my sleep study?

A. Wash your hair and scalp, but do not use any conditioner, hair gel or hair spray. Bring comfortable pajamas. Showers are available, so bring your favorite toiletries.

^ TOP Q. What is the Cole Neuroscience Center?

A. The Cole Neuroscience Center is named for Robert and Monica Cole, long-time benefactors of UT Medical Center and its neuroscience research and educational programs. The Coles became interested and involved with UT Medical Center when Mr. Cole was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1967. He died in 1984.

If you or someone you are caring for is dealing with a neurological disorder such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, movement or sleep problems, you already know that sometimes the services you need are hard to find. The Cole Neuroscience Center was developed to address your special needs.

For more information or a referral, contact the Cole Neuroscience Center at 865.305.8761.

^ TOP Q. What is Sleep Apnea?

A. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which the sleeper stops breathing for periods of up to two minutes, caused by obstructions to the movement of air in the upper respiratory passages. Sleep apnea is potentially a life-threatening condition that can cause or contribute to heart attacks, strokes, impotence, high blood pressure and heart disease.
