Asthma is a disease in which inflammation of the airways restricts airflow into and out of the lungs. When an asthma attack occurs, the muscles of the bronchial tree become tight, and the lining of the air passages swell, reducing airflow and producing the characteristic wheezing sound.

UT Medical Center’s Heart Lung Vascular Institute features an Asthma Clinic dedicated to assisting patients with more effective disease management. This educational program includes triggers and characteristics of asthma, the role of medicines in treatment and appropriate medication usage.

Treatment is aimed at avoiding known allergens and respiratory irritants and controlling symptoms and airway inflammation through medication. Allergy testing may be helpful in identifying allergens in patients with persistent asthma.

If you experience any unusual coughing, chest discomfort, wheezing or breathing difficulty, schedule an appointment with your doctor. The Heart Lung Vascular Institute at UT Medical Center provides excellent patient-centered care through its Respiratory Services.
