Lifting the spirits of UT Medical Center patients is what the volunteer program is all about. Volunteers are involved in such activities as delivering flowers, mail and gifts. Volunteers visit regularly with refreshments, reading materials, a cheerful smile and a comforting word. Hospital volunteers also provide a valuable source of information for the patients' families and friends and are especially important when serving as a liaison during crucial times. The hospital gift shop opened in 1972. It has become a major fundraising activity of the volunteers. Profits from the gift shop provide scholarships, equipment and financial assistance to various departments.
Volunteers provide the following.
- Bright, cheerful countenances and encouragement;
- A hospitality cart which provides sundries, newspapers, candy, etc.;
- Transportation assistance (i.e., wheelchairs);
- Delivery of fresh cut flowers, mail and cards to the patient rooms;
- Assistance to various departments and offices.
Since 1962, UT Medical Center has enjoyed the services of the Volunteers who have given over 650,000 hours. We offer both patient contact services and non-patient care areas of service. Our goal is to match your talents and interests with the needs of the Medical Center. Our Department coordinates the activities of three main groups of volunteers: The Auxiliary, Independent Volunteers, and the Junior Volunteers.
Auxiliary Volunteers is comprised primarily of people seeking a long term commitment. The Auxiliary is governed by a board and is involved in fund-raising activities which allow for the purchase of needed equipment and the provision of scholarships. You need not participate in the fund-raising aspects if you so choose. All Auxiliary members work in the hospital; most choosing one 4-hour shift per week.
Independent Volunteers is comprised of college students and working people who want to volunteer evenings and weekends. Most of our students are pursuing a health career.
Junior Volunteers is for students 14 to 18 years of age. Juniors work in a variety of areas throughout the Medical Center. It is particularly helpful to students who are considering a future in the medical field. It is a good opportunity to determine if the hospital is an environment in which you would like to work one day. Juniors work in the summer months and may work during the school year once they have completed orientation. The annual deadline for junior volunteer applications is April 15.
