Whether you are going back to work, have a premature or hospitalized baby, medical complications, are going on a trip or decided to pump breast milk exclusively, the Center for Women’s Health at the University of Tennessee Medical Center has made it easy and convenient to get the products you need by offering breast pumps, baby scales and a variety of accessories.

Why rent a breastpump?

A rental pump is a very high quality pump designed to establish your milk supply. This is the best type to use if you are pumping during the first month after delivery. Some insurance companies reimburse rental fees for pumps used for medical reasons such as breastfeeding difficulty or if your baby has to stay in the hospital due to prematurity or illness.

Using a previously owned, personal-use breast pump is not advised due to bacteria and viruses that may be transmitted. However, rental breast pumps are designed with special barriers and filters to prohibit milk from entering the pump motor to allow multiple users. When you rent a pump from the Center for Women’s Health, you will receive a new personal kit that includes everything needed to begin pumping.

How Do I Rent or Purchase?

In order to rent or purchase a breast pump or baby scale from the Center for Women’s Health, you need to have a prescription for an “electric breast pump” from your doctor, baby’s doctor or nurse practitioner. Also, mothers under the age of 18 are required to have an adult’s signature to take responsibility for the pump.

Rental pumps are available seven days a week. Please call the lactation consultant at 305.9337 to schedule an appointment.

What If I Need Help?

If you require assistance or have any questions or concerns, please call the Lactation Consultants at 305.9337. The Center for Women’s Health has certified lactation consultants available for patients during their hospital stay Monday through Friday during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Outpatient services are available by appointment.

Where do I rent the pump or scale?

First, call Lactation Services at 305-9337 to check availability. Breastpumps are rented 7 days a week and can be picked up on the Mother-Baby unit.

Baby scales can be rented through the lactation consultants.

What does it cost?

  • The first month’s rental fee (see below) is payable by cash, check, or charge.
  • At the beginning of each month, you will be billed until the pump is returned.
  • Mothers under the age of 18 need an adult to sign for the pump.

Where do I return the pump?

  • Please return breast pump to the Intensive Care Nursery desk on the 3 rd Floor.
  • There is a cleaning fee of $10 if the pump has not been wiped off. We will sanitize the pump.
  • The kit (2 diaphragms, tubing, breast flanges, manual pump) is yours to keep.
