Facts About Transplantation

UT Medical Center’s Transplant Services is home to the only kidney transplant program in the region and has performed approximately 800 transplants since 1985. Many people wait years before a transplant match can be found. The length of time it takes to receive a transplant is governed by many factors, including blood type, length of time on the waiting list, severity of illness and other medical criteria.

These facts are the updated waiting list numbers as of Sept. 21, 2007. It includes the following data on the number of patients waiting on Sept. 21, 2007.

  • 73,234 patients waiting for a kidney transplant.
  • 16,714 patients waiting for a liver transplant.
  • 1,644 patients waiting for a pancreas transplant.
  • 227 patients waiting for a pancreas islet cell.
  • 2,321 patients waiting for a kidney-pancreas transplant.
  • 215 patients waiting for an intestine transplant.
  • 2,628 patients waiting for a heart transplant.
  • 115 patients waiting for a heart-lung transplant.
  • 2,340 patients waiting for a lung transplant.
  • 96,930 TOTAL PATIENTS*
