Some sleep disorders have multiple causes and make them difficult to diagnose. The UT Sleep Disorders Center offers medical evaluation to patients who are concerned about their sleep. The center provides comprehensive treatment and evaluation of unexplained problems with sleep that last over a significant time period. Disorders include sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, sleepwalking, nightmares and night terrors and insomnia.
More than 70 million Americans suffer from some type of sleep problem, with nearly 60% suffering from a chronic disorder. Health experts tell us that most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep each night and children need even more.
Sleep disorders are not just personal health issues but are public health issues. It is estimated that approximately 100,000 traffic accidents a year are sleep-related; the federal government estimates that sleep-related problems add approximately $16 billion to the nation’s healthcare bill.
At UT Medical Center’s sleep center, experts are available to help with the diagnosis and treatment of your sleep disorder.
Diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders are individualized for each patient. An initial evaluation will help to identify your sleep problem. Your physician may then determine that you need a sleep study to accurately diagnose the sleep disorder.
In order to study your sleep, various brain activities and body systems will be observed throughout the night. After the study, your physician will better understand your specific sleep patterns and problems. Treatment recommendations will be made based on the study results.
If you answer yes to one or more of these questions, you may have a sleep problem.
