Nursing experience and learning opportunities are neverending. As the East Tennessee region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, the region’s only Transplant Center, the region’s first certified Primary Stroke Center, the region’s only private-room Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and serves as a regional Perinatal Center, the hospital offers a unique and exciting environment that will optimize your nursing knowledge, further develop nursing skills and grow your nursing career. Nurses play an important role in continuously maintaining and improving the hospital’s already excellent patient care and overall patient experience.

Leading-edge technology, treatment and education

We continually strive to be on the leading edge of patient treatment. We are one of only 12 hospitals nationwide who have instituted, and begun to use, the Adam Williams Initiative and the LICOX brain tissue oxygenation monitor. This protocol and equipment is leading to dramatically improved outcomes for traumatic brain injury patients whose prognosis, without the treatment, would have been bleak. We are in our second year utilizing APACHE, a one million patient database with outcome data specific to critical care patients. Our recently expanded LIFESTAR aeromedical service has just received the Service of the Year award from the Region II EMS Director’s Association.

The University of Tennessee Medical Center also is at the forefront of instituting therapeutic hypothermia for post cardiac arrest, continuous renal replacement therapy, robotic cardiac surgery, ventricular assistive devices and automatic acceptance protocols for trauma, cardiovascular events and stroketo name just a few of the newer technologies and techniques we are helping to pioneer.

The medical center’s five critical care units and academics are training some of the nation’s best critical care nurses. Our 12-week adult critical care training course is open to nurses who want to enter this demanding field of service. Nurses must have 1 to 2 years medical surgical experience. The 480-hour course is based on body systems and trains nurses on the equipment used in critical care units. The course is taught in modular form with classroom didactics and clinicals. Completing the course places graduates in one of the most in-demand subspecialties of nursing.
