The Heart Lung Vascular Institute brings together expertise in clinical care, teaching and research. Patients receive exceptional healthcare combined with patient-centered care.

We are proud that our hospital has been designated a Magnet® hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for outstanding patient care and nursing excellence. The recognition is the highest honor that a hospital can receive for nursing care.
The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® is based on rigorous standards valued by every patient: nurse competency, nurse credentials such as education and certification, best practices, patient satisfaction, patient safety and outcomes, and—of course—compassionate care.
National recognition as a Magnet hospital requires that we not only have a track record of sustained excellence in healthcare, but also that we are committed to improving clinical care in the future. We're pleased about this recognition because it's proof of what we have always known: our nurses—along with our entire medical and hospital staff—are exceptional people. And it demonstrates why an academic medical center is important to every person living throughout our region.
"We must be clear that Magnet recognition is by no means a prize or an award, but rather a data and process driven measurement of patient outcomes at The University of Tennessee Medical Center. Achieving Magnet status demonstrates to all those we care for the expertise and compassion provided by our talented and dedicated nursing staff and other clinicians. We are honored to achieve this designation." - Janell Cecil, Chief Nursing Officer
The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Accolades, like those developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), is one of many things UT Medical Center strives for to ensure our patients are receiving outstanding and comprehensive care. Magnet is the leading source of successful nursing practices and strategies worldwide.

Magnet News
There are almost 6,000 hospitals in the U.S. But only 6.5% of them have earned special recognition. And of those 6.5%, only one of them is located here in our region: The University of Tennessee Medical Center. Research has shown that patient care outcomes are better at Magnet® hospitals, where there is an environment that empowers nurses, values their contributions and supports nursing leadership.
Studies assessing links between the work environment for nurses and the patient safety climate find Magnet hospitals experience:
