Intern Program

The Intern Program is designed to help welcome and familiarize the new RN graduate to Nursing at UT Medical Center. New graduates typically are hired into the medical surgical areas that represent the various service lines of the hospital. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the other Center for Women & Children’s Health areas have additional programs for new graduates. The program begins with general hospital orientation, followed by two weeks of class time and clinical preparation information.  All new graduates are assessed using the Basic Knowledge Assessment Exam that determines their needs for clinical orientation and determines their individualized competency based plan. In most units, orientation typically takes 12 weeks to successfully complete the program.

To apply, watch for and apply for the Nurse Intern Program.  Individual unit preferences will be determined upon further screening and interview.

The Operating Room offers an eight-month residency and clinical rotation. NOTE: This program requires a two-year commitment. Applicants need to apply early in the year to the Perioperative Nurse Intern Program.

Critical Care Internships: If selected for a position in either of our critical care units, the ECCO program will be used for orientation.  This program requires a two-year commitment.
