MRI FAQs

  1. What is an MRI?
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It uses a combination of radio waves and hydrogen atoms in your body to form highly detailed images that radiologists use to diagnose illness. There is no ionizing radiation associated with MRIs.

  2. How long will my test take?
We allow 50 minutes for your MRI scan. This includes starting an IV, if necessary, reviewing your paperwork, answering any questions you may have and the scan itself. Keep in mind that if your doctor orders multiple examinations you could be with us longer.

  3. When can I expect the results from my test?
Generally, your physician will get a full report within 2 to 3 business days.

  4. Sheet Metal Workers/Welders
If you have a history of working in or around sheet metal and have never had a MRI at UT Medical Center, you may be required to have X-Rays done of your orbits/skull to ensure that you have no metallic fragments in or around the head and eyes. This is done for your safety as metallic fragments could heat up or potentially move as a result of the strong magnetic field.

  5. Patients with surgically implanted medical devices/hardware.
We cannot scan patients with pacemakers, pacer wires, defibrillator patches or aneurysm clips. These items are not compatible with the strong magnetic field of a MRI scanner. Heart stents, coils and filters must be in for 6-8 weeks before we can scan them. If you have an implantable device, please make sure you bring your implant record with you the day of your appointment.

  6. What if I am claustrophobic?
It is important to us for you to know that all of our MRI scanners are open on both ends. However, the body part we need to look at must be in the center of the magnet in order for us to get the best images possible. This often means that your whole body will be inside the scanner.

If you are claustrophobic you may wish to speak with your ordering physician about obtaining a sedative for you take prior to your procedure. Unfortunately, we cannot administer sedatives on the day of your appointment. We do have the availability to perform MRIs under the use of IV sedation or anesthesia. This must be ordered and scheduled by your physician and our radiology RN.

Most importantly, we do not want you to be embarrassed to let us know you are claustrophobic. We will answer any questions we can and do everything possible to make sure you are comfortable before your scan.
