Incontinence and Pelvic Pain
Incontinence simply means the involuntary loss of urine sever enough to have adverse social or hygienic consequences. Incontinence occurs when the bladder does not empty completely or does not store urine appropriately. Factors that contribute are weight, smoking, childbearing, certain medications and caffeine intake.
• Stress incontinence is the sudden involuntary loss of urine typically caused by sneezing, coughing, laughing, jumping or any form of physical exertion.
• Urge incontinence occurs when the urge to urinate is very strong and you cannot reach the toilet in time because the bladder contracts abnormally during filling.
Pelvic pain generally means experiencing pain, pressure or ache usually localized in or around the vagina or rectal areas, lower abdomen, pelvis or sometimes back and thighs.
Some of the causes of pelvic pain include the following.
• Infection
• Interstitial Cystitis
• Endometriosis
• Physical of Sexual Abuse
• Stress
• Abdominal Adhesions
• Poor Posture
Physical therapy can help with incontinence and pelvic pain. Physical therapy evaluation and treatment may include the following.
• Completing a bladder voiding diary and symptom questionnaire
• Observation of vaginal/rectal area
• Internal vaginal pelvic floor examination
• Measurement of muscle activity using biofeedback
• Electrical stimulation
• Deep breathing and abdominal exercises
• Education on pelvic floor anatomy, bladder health/retraining and a home program consisting of pelvic floor exercises
Discuss your concerns with your doctor. A physician’s referral is necessary for an evaluation and treatment by a physical therapist. Call Rehabilitation Services at 865.539.0403 or click here to make your appointment today!
