The surgical treatment of morbid obesity is a covered benefit under many insurance policies. Coverage depends on what type of policy you have and the terms within the policy. Each insurance policy can vary greatly, even when issued by the same company. Your employer dictates the coverage in your policy.Most insurances have requirements before they will approve your surgery. These requirements may include a 6-month medically supervised weight loss program, 2-5 year weight history, dietitian consultation and psychological evaluation.
The best way to know if you have coverage for bariatric surgery is to call your insurance company. You will need to contact the benefits department and ask if bariatric surgery is a covered benefit. You also can check with your Human Resources department.
