American Lung Association Fight for Air Walk Jun 2nd, 2012

Chronic lung disease is now the 3rd leading cause of death in America. Our 2012 fundraiser t-shirts are now available, all proceeds benefit the American Lung Association and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, they are $15 each and sizes are available from S – 3XL, a limited supply of children’s sizes are also available in YM and YL.

Please consider joining one of the UT Medical Center teams and participating in one of the upcoming walks to show support for these great causes. You do not have to pledge any money (although you can), your t-shirt is your donation. We had a great turnout last year; let’s see if we can do even better this year!

3Lung cancer is the deadliest type of cancer for both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. Lung cancer is more common in older adults. It is rare in people under age 45. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. The more cigarettes you smoke per day and the earlier you started smoking, the greater your risk of lung cancer. There is no evidence that smoking low-tar cigarettes lowers the risk. However, lung cancer has occurred in people who have never smoked. Secondhand smoke (breathing the smoke of others) increases your risk of lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 3,000 nonsmoking adults will die each year from lung cancer related to breathing secondhand smoke. The Tennessee Weight Loss and Surgery Center will be holding regular support group meetings for bariatric surgery patients. These groups are open to anyone who has had bariatric surgery or who is considering a weight-loss procedure.

The meetings will be moderated by Lynn Moreland, PA-C, and all meetings are held in Medical Office Building A, Suite 240. Wednesday meetings start at 5:30 p.m. for patients who have already had a bariatric surgery procedure and at 6:15 p.m. for those who are in process to have bariatric surgery.

Diabetes is a chronic (long-term) condition marked by abnormally high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. According to theNational Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), diabetes affects 25.8 million Americans. While an estimated 18.8 million have been diagnosed with diabetes (both type 1 and type 2), unfortunately, 7 million people (or nearly one third) are unaware that they have type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is widely recognized as one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognize diabetes as the 7th leading cause of death in the U.S.

The MAN RIDE Aug 11th, 2012

More than 241,740 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States in 2012, according to the American Cancer Society. Approximately 28,170 men are estimated to die from the disease. Early detection through methods such as prostate cancer screenings is crucial to boosting survival rates.

The University of Tennessee Medical Center and Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson have partnered for a motorcycle ride to increase prostate cancer awareness. The Man Ride is scenic ride through the Smoky Mountains with the safety support by Dixie Iron Riders. The Man Ride will be held on Saturday, August 11th at 11 a.m. beginning and ending at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson in Maryville.
