American Lung Association Fight for Air Walk Jun 2nd, 2012

Join us on June 2, 2012 for the Fight For Air Walk. The Walk will begin, and end, at Volunteer Landing in Downtown Knoxville. For registration or more information, click here.
3
Chronic lung disease is now the 3rd leading cause of death in America. Our 2012 fundraiser t-shirts are now available, all proceeds benefit the American Lung Association and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, they are $15 each and sizes are available from S – 3XL, a limited supply of children’s sizes are also available in YM and YL.
3
Please consider joining one of the UT Medical Center teams and participating in one of the upcoming walks to show support for these great causes. You do not have to pledge any money (although you can), your t-shirt is your donation. We had a great turnout last year; let’s see if we can do even better this year!
3Lung cancer is the deadliest type of cancer for both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. Lung cancer is more common in older adults. It is rare in people under age 45. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. The more cigarettes you smoke per day and the earlier you started smoking, the greater your risk of lung cancer. There is no evidence that smoking low-tar cigarettes lowers the risk. However, lung cancer has occurred in people who have never smoked. Secondhand smoke (breathing the smoke of others) increases your risk of lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 3,000 nonsmoking adults will die each year from lung cancer related to breathing secondhand smoke. The following may also increase one's risk of lung cancer: 3
3
3
High levels of air pollution
3
3
3
High levels of arsenic in drinking water
3
3
3
Radon gas
3
3
3
Asbestos
3
3
3
Family history of lung cancer
3
3
3
Radiation therapy to the lungs
3
3
Exposure to cancer-causing chemicals such as uranium, beryllium, vinyl chloride, nickel chromates, coal products, mustard gas, chloromethyl ethers, gasoline, and diesel exhaust
3
3
The University of Tennessee Medical Center Cancer Institute offers a new screening for the early detection of lung cancer. For more information, please call 865.305.6970 to schedule an appointment, or visit our website for more information.
