PGY1 Pharmacy Residency (6 positions/year)

Purpose and Outcomes
Pharmacists completing the PGY1 pharmacy residency will be prepared to practice as a clinical pharmacist in a variety of patient care settings, qualify for adjunct faculty positions at a college of pharmacy, and pursue PGY2 or fellowship training in their area of choice. They will have demonstrated competency as evidenced by their ability to:

  • Manage and improve the medication-use process
  • Provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams
  • Exercise leadership and practice management skills
  • Demonstrate project management skills
  • Provide medication and practice-related education/training
  • Utilize medical informatics
  • Participate in the management of medical emergencies

Description
This program is a one year ASHP-accredited residency designed to allow pharmacists to develop strong foundational pharmacotherapy, operational, and practice management skills enabling them to progress towards personal goals. PGY1 residents will refine these skills via a well-established integrated clinical practice model. Required rotations and experiences include: internal medicine, women’s and children’s medicine, infectious disease, critical care medicine, critical care trauma, family medicine, pulmonary, nephrology, cardiology, practice management, hospital pharmacy practice, drug information/drug use policy, student precepting, and the completion of a project. Electives include: oncology, transplant, neurology/academia, ambulatory care clinic, night-shift medicine, emergency medicine, and completion of a teaching certificate.

PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Critical Care (1-2 position/year)

Purpose and Outcomes
Pharmacists completing the PGY2 pharmacy residency in critical care will be prepared for clinical pharmacy specialist positions with the ability to qualify for faculty positions at a college of pharmacy. They will have achieved advanced competencies in critical care as evidenced by their ability to:

  • Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills
  • Optimize the outcomes of critically ill patients by providing evidence-based medication therapy as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrate excellence in the provision of training, including preceptorship, or educational activities for health care professionals and health care professionals in training
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to conduct a critical care pharmacy research project
  • Participate in the management of medical emergencies
Description

This program is a one-year ASHP-accredited residency designed to build on the foundational skills gained during the PGY1 residency year. Residents will refine their skills in the critical care environment via a well-established integrated clinical practice model with increased autonomy and responsibility for managing patient care practice and overseeing pharmacy students and PGY1 residents. The University of Tennessee Medical Center is a Level I trauma center for adults and children. Critical care medicine, critical care trauma, and emergency medicine are required components as well as academia and completion of a project. Elective experiences include infectious disease, cardiology, neonatology, nightshift medicine, transplant medicine, metabolic support, and neurology. Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency is required.

PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Internal Medicine (2 positions/year)

Purpose and Outcomes
Pharmacists completing the PGY2 pharmacy residency in internal medicine will be prepared for clinical pharmacy specialist positions with the ability to qualify for faculty positions at a college of pharmacy. They will have achieved advanced competencies in internal medicine as evidenced by their ability to:

  • Serve as an authoritative resource on the optimal use of medications
  • Optimize the outcomes of internal medicine patients by providing evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrate excellence in the provision of training and educational activities for health care professionals and health care professional in training
  • Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills
  • Contribute to the body of pharmacy knowledge in internal medicine
  • Evaluate, manage, and improve the medication-use process
  • Demonstrate skills required to function in an academic setting
  • Contribute to the organization’s management of emergency situations

Description
This program is a one-year ASHP-accredited residency designed to build on the foundational skills gained during the PGY1 residency year. Residents will refine their skills in the internal medicine environment via a well-established integrated clinical practice model with increased autonomy and responsibility for managing patient care practice and overseeing pharmacy students and PGY1 residents. Internal medicine, critical care medicine, ambulatory care, drug policy, academia, one medicine sub-specialty, and completion of a project are required components. Elective experiences include nephrology, transplant, cardiology, family medicine, nightshift medicine, hematology/oncology, critical care trauma, emergency medicine/trauma, neurology/academia, pulmonary, and administration. Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency is required.

24-Month Pharmacy Residency in Pharmacotherapy (1 position/year)

Purpose and Outcomes
Pharmacists completing the 24–month pharmacy residency in pharmacotherapy will be prepared for a career as a clinical pharmacy specialist caring for diverse inpatient and outpatient populations with the ability to qualify for faculty positions at a college of pharmacy. They will have achieved advanced competencies in a variety of patient settings and academia as evidenced by the following:

  • Manage and improve the medication-use process
  • Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills
  • Demonstrate project management skills
  • Optimize the outcomes of diverse populations of inpatients and outpatients with varied and complex health care problems through expert provision of evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Serve as an authoritative resource on the optimal use of medications
  • Participate in the management of medical emergencies
  • Demonstrate excellence in the provision of training and educational activities for health care professionals, health care professionals in training and the public
  • Contribute to the body of pharmacotherapy knowledge
  • Demonstrate skills required to function in an academic setting
Description

This program is a 24-month residency designed to allow the pharmacist to develop strong foundational pharmacotherapy, operational, practice management, and academic skills enabling them to progress towards personal goals. Residents will practice with an increasing level of autonomy and responsibility for managing patient care practices as well as overseeing pharmacy students and residents as the years progress. Teaching, writing and research skills will be enhanced to prepare for a faculty position. Required components of the program include family medicine, ambulatory care, critical care medicine, transplant medicine, oncology, infectious disease, academia, practice management/medication safety, drug information/drug use policy, hospital pharmacy practice and the completion of a project. Additional requirements include the completion of a teaching certificate program with opportunities for didactic, small-group and case-based teaching. Multiple inpatient and outpatient opportunities are available as elective experiences.
