Men & Belly Fat: What you need to know

All of us could probably stand to lose a few pounds, but it is where the weight is settling that is the problem. If you are more apt to gain weight all over your body, you are doing better than if you just gain weight in the belly. You should know the risks that come with having more belly fat.

Men with belly fat are at a greater risk for health problems than those with weight evenly distributed. Also, men are more likely than most women to gain belly fat. These are some of the risk factors associated with belly fat.

Some of the ways to check and see if you might have too much belly fat is to check your body mass index (BMI) or your waist size. BMI is a comparison of your height verses your weight. Check your BMI on the BMI Calculator.

In most men the health risks associated with belly fat are more likely to occur if your waist size is more than 40 inches. Use the following tips to properly measure you waist size.

  1. Place a tape measure around your bare abdomen just above your hipbone.
  2. Pull the tape measure until it fits snugly around you but doesn't push into your skin.
  3. Make sure the tape measure is level all the way around.
  4. Relax, exhale and measure your waist — no sucking in your belly!

You need to make sure that you are changing your lifestyle to better health. Start eating healthy balanced meals with the recommended daily servings. Also, get up and get active! Find the exercise that you enjoy best such as biking, jogging, tennis or walking and stick with it. Just a 30 minute walk will help lose weight and lower stress.

Drinking beer causes the “Beer Belly” affect. Yes, beer can cause a weight gain due to the calories that your body is ingesting. Limit your alcohol intake to cut calories and help your overall health and well-being.
