Health Information Center / Preston Medical Library

As the
only academic medical center serving 21 counties in Eastern Tennessee, the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) is uniquely positioned and well-qualified to serve as the area’s premier source for health information. UT Medical Center has allocated time and resources to establish a comprehensive medical library and information system, the Preston Medical Library and Learning Resource Center, that enables our physicians, residents, researchers, and other medical professionals to access data, information and the resources they need to fulfill the Medical Center and UT Graduate School of Medicine’s overall mission to serve through healing, education and discovery.

As our commitment to providing holistic, multidisciplinary, collaborative care has become the cornerstone of our mission as well as our clinical practice, the need to expand our informational capabilities to reach our patients and other health consumers in addition to health care providers has become evident. Information and education for patients and their families is central to the treatment of all diseases and illness, as well as maintaining wellness. When patients understand their medical condition and the options available to them, they can work more effectively with their team of physicians and other health care providers to design a customized treatment plan optimal for them.

The number of individuals, health care professionals and health care consumers seeking information through the Preston Medical Library and Learning Resource Center is on the rise. This rapidly expanding user population, coupled with limited physical space and significant technological advancements that have altered how patrons desire to utilize the UT Medical Center Library, has prompted the Medical Center to initiate a $4.1 million dollar capital campaign to further support the development of the University of Tennessee Medical Center Health Information Center.

The cost to establish the University of Tennessee Medical Center Health Information Center is estimated at $4.1 million and includes:

  • Relocation of Preston Medical Library, computing equipment and technology $2.1 million
  • Construction of the 100-seat conference center - $1 million
  • Relocation of Admitting Offices - $1 million
Raised to Date: $2,400,276.67
