Rev. Steve Sexton Named Director of Pastoral Care at UT Medical Center

The University of Tennessee Medical Center recently promoted Rev. Steve Sexton to the position of director of Pastoral Care. Prior to the advancement, Sexton served for 16 years as a chaplain in the Pastoral Care Department at the medical center.

“Steve is an amazing chaplain here at UT Medical Center, and I believe his calming presence and his talents have been tremendously positive in assisting our patients, their families and our staff throughout the years,” said Janell Cecil, chief nursing officer at UT Medical Center. “Steve’s sense of humor, care and compassion coupled with his many years of experience will help our Pastoral Care Department continue to be a vital part of the medical center as well as the community.”

In his new role, Sexton will oversee the administrative duties of the Pastoral Care Department as well as the six full-time staff chaplains and several chaplain residents and interns attending the Clinical Pastoral Education program. In addition to his new responsibilities, Sexton will continue to provide pastoral care to the patients, families and staff at UT Medical Center.

“It is an honor to be able to serve in this capacity,” said Sexton. “I look forward to helping guide the direction of the department in this new role with the medical center, and I’m quite excited that I’ll also continue to have a very active role in working with the patients and staff members who are in need of pastoral care.”

Sexton received his bachelor’s in music from William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Miss., and went on to earn a Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Following the completion of his degrees, Sexton spent two years studying at the Georgetown Bowen Family Center in Washington, D.C.

Sexton, who serves on the boards of The Dream Connection and The Mental Health Association of East Tennessee, is a graduate of the Leadership Knoxville Class of 2002.
