New Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical and Dental Education

The UT Graduate School of Medicine (GSM) is delighted to announce that Dr. Bill Metheny has accepted the position of assistant dean for Graduate Medical & Dental Education. The search committee is to be commended for their efforts bringing in four excellent candidates to be interviewed. While all candidates had several strengths, Dr. Metheny’s experience and knowledge rose to the top.

Dr. Metheny brings a tremendous amount of experience to the GSM and will work hand-in-hand with Dr. Eddie Moore to achieve educational goals. Dr. Metheny has worked extensively with residents and medical students at Brown University. He is well-published in the field of medical education and is nationally recognized for his efforts, including contributions to professional organizations.

In keeping with his appointment at Brown University, Dr. Metheny’s faculty appointment will be in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His start date with the Graduate School of Medicine will be Nov. 1, 2007.

The comments below are from his current chair, Donald R. Coustan, MD, at Brown University announcing his leaving.

“Dr. Metheny joined the faculty in 1991, at a time when our residency and core clerkship needed attention. Thanks to Bill's efforts, and those of our entire voluntary and academic faculty, both of these educational programs are now pre-eminent, both at the medical school and nationally. He has faithfully served as our Core Clerkship Director and has mentored hundreds of medical students. His knot-tying prowess is legendary among the Brown med school alumni. He has steered us through many changes in medical education, including the core competencies and the work-hour limitations for residents. He has taken responsibility for CME in the department and also has taken on the thankless task of preparing the call schedule for our team physicians.

“Bill's 16 years here have been marked by innovation, thoughtful change management and collaboration across disciplines and within our own discipline. Our department has thrived in no small part due to his efforts.

“He rose from associate professor to full professor here at Brown. Bill also has achieved national prominence in medical education circles. He was the first non-physician to chair UMEC, the Undergraduate Medical Education Committee at APGO. He was the first inductee into the Academy of Teaching Scholars. The recognition that Bill has earned has reflected back on our department. I believe that he is the only PhD to have been named "Employee of the Month" here at Women & Infants Hospital.”
