Nurses at UT Medical Center Earn Certification Through the Certifying Board of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates

Three nurses from the University of Tennessee Medical Center have earned or renewed a Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse (CGRN) certification through the Certifying Board of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates. The nurses—Jayne Lusk, RN, CGRN; Mike Travis, RN, CGRN; and Lynn Venafro, RN, CGRN—work in the Endoscopy Center at UT Medical Center.

“We’re very proud of Jayne, Mike and Lynn,” said Janell Cecil, chief nursing officer at UT Medical Center. “Earning or renewing the gastroenterology registered nurse certification is quite a challenge, and I firmly believe these nurses have once again shown their commitment to caring for our patients and to the nursing profession through obtaining this certification.”

Lusk recently earned her certification, while Travis has maintained his certification for nearly a decade and Venafro has maintained her certification for more than 11 years.

Lusk is a member of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates and both Travis and Venafro are members of the Tennessee Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (TSGNA). Venafro has served in various TSGNA positions and on multiple committees within the East division. Currently she is the president elect of TSGNA and, in October, she will take over as president of the organization.

About CGRN Certification and the Certifying Board of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates
CGRN certification is completed through the Certifying Board of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates. Obtaining the CGRN certification shows that nurses and associates have an elevated level of experience in and extensive knowledge of gastroenterology nursing. Only after completing a minimum of 4,000 hours or two years of gastroenterology nursing employment can a nurse sit for the exam. In order to maintain this status, nurses are required to be recertified every five years.

The Certifying Board of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates, Inc. is a volunteer nonprofit organization. Its purpose is to maintain and improve the knowledge, understanding, and skill of nurses in the fields of gastroenterology/endoscopy by developing and administering a certification program.
