Exercise: Finding Fall Family Fun

By Wendi Hope Bishop, Editor

School started again, and everyone has found themselves working, shuffling the kids around, trying to squeeze dinner in before 7 p.m. so everyone can get to bed at a decent hour. In frantically trying to pull off each day, many people forget that even though they are busy, they might not be getting the exercise they need. After all, sitting in a car for several hours during the day does not constitute a work out.

The weather is starting to improve and now is a great time to get the family together to enjoy the outdoors and all that autumn has to offer. This fall, revive that exercise plan by infusing some family fun into your exercise goals.

  1. Walk the dog together.
  2. Play at the park – use the equipment or play catch or tag.
  3. Find new bike trails in your area and enjoy the colorful scenery.
  4. Walk or bicycle with your kids to school.
  5. Take the kids to the zoo.
  6. Go hiking and look for interesting leaves and use them for art projects or crafts.
  7. Establish a family football night. (Or basketball, soccer, catch or whatever your family enjoys playing.)
  8. Walk through your neighborhood after dinner each night.
  9. Run around a corn maze and then pick your own pumpkins.
  10. Rake leaves and jump in them.

Children are more likely to participate in exercise if they are having fun and doing it along side mom and dad. Change up the routine by doing different activities and allowing each member of the family to offer ideas. The idea is to have fun by varying activities, sharing with family and choosing activities that you love to do. Get your whole family together and enjoy the exercise that the autumn outdoors offers.
