UT Medical Center Surgeons Help Around the World

Dr. Lou Smith and Dr. Todd Nickloes, both general and trauma surgeons with University General Surgeons at The University of Tennessee Medical Center, recently put their surgical and critical care skills to use to help patients in Iraq and Nicaragua.

Dr. Nickloes spent 45 days on active duty at Camp Anaconda/Balad Air Force Base, Iraq, as a critical care air transport flight surgeon, with 332 Expeditionary Air Evacuation Flight. Over a span of 30 days, he completed 28 combat sorties, providing care to more than 75 soldiers, sailors and marines – 15 of whom were critically injured. Each of these patients were moved via massive air lift capabilities from intra-theater hospitals in and around Iraq to Germany, before ultimately be flown to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Smith spent a week in Chinandega, Nicaragua, at the St. Martin De Porres Hospital as a member of a surgical group that operated on 50 patients. The group is sponsored by Amigos for Christ, an ecumenical organization based in Buford, Ga., that organizes three general surgery missions each year. Amigos for Christ also builds homes and supplies potable water for refugees of natural disasters and those living in extreme poverty. The area experienced heavy rain and power outages during the time of Dr. Smith’s mission due to Hurricane Felix.

When not saving and improving lives elsewhere around the world, Dr. Nickloes and Dr. Smith are doing those things in East Tennessee. Both are surgeons with University General Surgeons, which staffs the Level I trauma center at UT Medical Center. University General Surgeons is a general surgical practice that specializes in complex cases and is available for all areas of general surgery such as hernia, gall bladder, appendectomy, skin lesions, colon surgeries, etc.
