UT Medical Center Nurses Achieve Nursing Specialty Certifications

Several nurses at the University of Tennessee Medical Center have achieved nursing specialty certifications. This group includes Haley Bernard, RN-BC, BSN; Tina Kelley, RN-BC; Julie Hutchinson, RNC; K. Renee James, RN-BC, MSN, CVN; Loretta Smithers, CDN, RN; and Kathy Stohrer, CNN, RN.

“We have outstanding nurses throughout the medical center who are willing to take the extra step, further their learning in their profession and help elevate the level of patient care,” said Janell Cecil, chief nursing officer at UT Medical Center. “We’re thankful to Haley, Tina, Julie, Renee, Loretta and Kathy for their continued commitment to patient care.”

About the Specialty Nursing Certifications


Bernard and Kelley’s RN-BC (registered nurse-board certified) certification is given through the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and it denotes specialized knowledge and skills in the specialty of medical-surgical nursing,

Hutchinson’s RNC (registered nurse, certified national certification corporation) certification is given through the National Certification Corp., and it represents advanced knowledge in neonatal intensive care.

James’ CVN (certified vascular nurse) certification is given through the American College of Cardiovascular Nurses Inc., and it represents a specialized knowledge and skill set concerning cardiovascular patient care.

Smithers’ CDN (certified dialysis nurse) certification and Stohrer’s CNN (certified in nephrology nursing) certification are given through the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission. The certifications show that these nurses have specialized knowledge and skills in the areas of dialysis and nephrology nursing, respectively.
