Janell Cecil Named Senior Vice President at UT Medical Center

The University of Tennessee Medical Center announced the promotion of Janell Cecil to senior vice president and chief nursing officer. The move puts Cecil within the highest level of management at the medical center.

“Janell Cecil has provided us with a tremendous blend of experience, skill, leadership, professionalism, vision and energy while leading the efforts to ensure nursing excellence and exceptional nursing care for our patients,” said Joe Landsman, president and CEO of The University of Tennessee Medical Center. “We are extremely fortunate to have Janell representing our nurses, who are so critical in providing the highest quality of care to our patients. Recognizing the significant role of the professional practice of nursing in our organization, we believe it’s absolutely crucial for our chief nursing officer to serve at our most senior level of management.”

Promoted to the role of chief nursing officer in early 2007, Cecil spent the previous five years as vice president of the Center for Women and Children’s Health at the medical center. With the added role of senior vice president, Cecil will be instrumental in making decisions to ensure continued success for nursing and throughout UT Medical Center.

“It is a privilege to be able to build on my passion for providing excellent patient care through the nursing profession by contributing at the senior management level for the region’s only academic medical center,” Cecil said. “My mission in this role is to work alongside our entire nursing staff through what we’re calling a Journey to Excellence. That journey includes ensuring that all of our clinicians are prepared to best care for our patients.”

Prior to joining UT Medical Center, Cecil worked for seven years as the system service line administrator for Women and Children’s Services at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. She spent several years early in her career providing direct patient care as a nurse.

“Janell has demonstrated her commitment to continuing to advance our capabilities at this medical center, both from a patient care and nursing excellence perspective,” Landsman said. “Her talent and drive will serve this entire community well as a member of our senior leadership team.”

Cecil earned her Master’s in nursing from the University of Missouri, in Kansas City, Mo., and her Bachelor’s in nursing from Webster University in Kansas City, Mo. While in school, Cecil’s outstanding coursework earned her membership to Sigma Theta Tau, the national honor society for nursing.

A Farragut resident, Cecil is a member of Executive Women’s Association, the Tennessee Organization of Nurse Executives, the East Tennessee Healthcare Executive Association and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses.
