More than 175 golfers and volunteers hit the links on behalf of trauma patients throughout East Tennessee on May 2 for the 3rd annual Tee Up for Trauma golf tournament. The event benefits trauma care at The University of Tennessee Medical Center, the region’s only Level I trauma center. Officials from the Office of Development for UT Medical Center and UT Graduate School of Medicine say this year’s tournament raised more than $36,000, which will be used to directly benefit patient care.
“We had so much fun at the tournament,” said Chris Bray, director of Major Gifts for the medical center and graduate school of medicine. “I can’t thank our tremendous team of volunteers enough for working so hard to ensure the success of this year’s Tee Up for Trauma. Led by Tee Up for Trauma chairman J.D. Jenkins, our committee members all volunteered their time and efforts to do something that would help UT Medical Center purchase equipment to save lives of people involved in traumas. This group was committed to helping people in our region, and we’re very thankful and proud of them for all of their efforts.”

This year’s Tee Up for Trauma raised about twice as much as the 2007 tournament. The money raised will be used to purchase a portable ultrasound machine. Within 15 seconds of turning on the machine that’s the size of a laptop computer, trauma surgeons will be able to see a live ultrasound image of the patient. The image can help surgeons detect unsafe conditions that may require immediate surgery.
The tournament’s winning team consisted of golfers Jonathan Fortner, Cullen Copeland, David Carter and Kelly Buckles. Major sponsors of the event included University Anesthesiologists, First Tennessee and Calhoun’s Restaurants.
