Family Event Creates Prostate Cancer AwarenessSeptember is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and offers two exciting Knoxville events: The Man Run and a series of FREE prostate cancer screenings.
Sept. 6 kicks off the month with The Man Run for Prostate Cancer Awareness presented by SunTrust Bank, East Tennessee. Bring your family and join the first-of-its-kind annual event in the Knoxville area supporting prostate cancer awareness and outreach. Located at Tyson Park (2351 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN), the 5K Man Run race will begin at 8 a.m. with the 1 Mile Run/Walk beginning at 8:30 a.m. You can easily register for the race at www.active.com (event name: The Man Run Knoxville). All funds raised will support free prostate cancer screenings and educational programs of The University of Tennessee Medical Center. Additional donations are accepted and are tax deductible.
“While prostate cancer is a very serious disease affecting men in our region, I think we’ve come up with a fun family event for everyone in the community to participate and help combat prostate cancer here in East Tennessee,” said Renee Hawk, vice president of the Cancer Institute at The University of Tennessee Medical Center. “The Man Run will be enjoyable for all who attend, and it will contribute to something incredibly positive in terms of prostate cancer outreach and education programs. What better way to celebrate and recognize our sons, brothers, fathers and the men in our lives who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.”

Additional sponsorship and volunteer opportunities for THE MAN RUN for Prostate Cancer Awareness, Presented by SunTrust Bank, East Tennessee, are available. For questions or more information about these opportunities, email cancerinstitute@utmck.edu or call the Cancer Institute at UT Medical Center at 865.305.8577.
Proceeds from the race will support expansion of current prostate cancer outreach education and screening programs provided by the UT Medical Center Cancer Institute. According to Dr. John L. Bell, director of the Cancer Institute at UT Medical Center, each entry fee for THE MAN RUN will allow UT Medical Center to screen two more men in the community for prostate cancer.
“The yearly free prostate cancer screenings in September (see below) that are provided by our urologists and the Cancer Institute have been beneficial in raising awareness of prostate cancer and helping men to take charge of their health,” Dr. Bell said. “Now, with The Man Run, we can come together as an entire community, have a great time in doing so and provide the resources to reach out even further into our region to screen men and save lives."
FREE Prostate Cancer Screenings will be available during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The University of Tennessee Medical Center will offer free prostate screenings for men 50 and older and those 45 and older who are African American and who have a family history of prostate cancer.
Screening includes a digital rectal exam and a blood test called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA).
Appointments are available for the following prostate cancer screening days.
For an appointment, call 865.305.6055.
