Surgical Oncologist Specializing in Skin Cancer Treatment Joins Cancer Institute

Surgical oncologist Dr. Jim Lewis recently joined The University of Tennessee Medical Center’s Cancer Institute. Fellowship trained in surgical oncology and experienced at treating a wide variety of cancers requiring surgical intervention, Lewis has an additional special interest in the multidisciplinary management of melanoma and sarcoma. Lewis also will serve as assistant professor of Surgical Oncology with UT Graduate School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery. 

“Dr. Jim Lewis brings excellent training and knowledge to the Cancer Institute and our patients,” said Renee Hawk, vice president of UT Medical Center’s Cancer Institute. “Dr. Lewis is quite skilled in the treatment of breast, colon, pancreas and other cancers. Additionally, his special interest in the areas of cutaneous malignancy, soft tissue sarcoma and regional infusion and perfusion therapy for malignancy will be of significant benefit to patients in this community.”

Before joining the medical center, Lewis recently completed back-to-back fellowships in surgical oncology and melanoma/sarcoma at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla. where he also served as an adjunct faculty member for the University of South Florida.

“It is a privilege to join UT Medical Center and the faculty at UT and serve the region’s surgical oncology needs,” said Lewis. “I look forward to helping develop a multidisciplinary team approach for the treatment of cutaneous malignancy and sarcoma for the people of East Tennessee.”

Lewis served as Chief Resident during his residency at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Prior to his residency, he completed a surgical research fellowship and junior residency in surgery also at LSU. Lewis earned his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Fla., and earned his bachelor’s from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla. During his academic training, Lewis received numerous awards for his practice and research of medicine.

Lewis is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society of Surgical Oncology, Corrective Tissue Oncology Society, American College of Surgeons and Association for Surgical Education. He frequently participates in community skin cancer screenings and other skin cancer outreach projects.

The move to Tennessee brought Lewis and his wife, Kristen, to West Knoxville. The couple has two children, Carleigh, 3, and Alexander, 5 months. Lewis enjoys fishing, boating, antiques and college athletics.
