UT Medical Center Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Reaches 1000th Enrollment

On Oct. 22, 1993, the first patient was entered into an oncology trial at The University of Tennessee Medical Center Cancer Institute. Fifteen years and many trials later, the Oncology Clinical Trials department is celebrating the 1,000th enrollment! The patient of Dr. Wahid Hanna was the 1,000th person to enroll in a clinical trial on Jan. 15, 2009, and was presented a plaque to memorialize the occasion.

Participants in clinical studies have access to promising new approaches that often are not available outside the clinical trial setting, receive more intense monitoring from the research team and may be the first to benefit from the new method. Results from the studies are critical to making new discoveries and helping others in the future.

As the region’s only academic institution, UT Medical Center has a dedicated Oncology Clinical Trials Division that participates in research studies of national merit, including those sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, pharmaceutical industries and its own internal, investigator-initiated clinical trials.

Currently, more than 40 oncology clinical trials are open to patient enrollment. The Cancer Institute continues its mission to advance cancer research and, ultimately, lead the way to new cancer-related discoveries.

The Cancer Institute would like to recognize and honor the many patients who chose to participate in a clinical trial, the members of the Clinical Trials department and all of the physicians and other staff who support oncology research at The University of Tennessee Medical Center.
