The University of Tennessee Medical Center’s Breast Health Outreach Program will hold a free breast health education program on Saturday, February 21 at 10:00 am at Oak Valley Baptist Church (194 Hampton Road) in Oak Ridge. Area women are encouraged to attend to learn more about breast cancer risk and the importance of early detection.
The Mobile Mammography Unit will then return to the church to offer screening mammograms 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 7. Women 40 and older are eligible for the screenings and may schedule an appointment by calling UT Medical Center’s Breast Health Outreach Program at 865.305.9753. Health insurance is filed for each participant and those without coverage may contact the Breast Health Outreach Program for available options.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation every two minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that women age 40 and older have a screening mammogram and a clinical breast exam every year. A mammogram can detect breast cancer up to two years before it is large enough to be felt. Detecting breast cancer at an early stage greatly improves chances of survival.
The Breast Health Outreach Program at the University of Tennessee Medical Center’s Cancer Institute provides essential breast health education and screenings to women throughout a 25-county East Tennessee region. Funded by the Knoxville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund and Champions for the Cause, the Breast Health Outreach Program at UT Medical Center has served more than 20,000 women since inception in 1996. For more information about the program, call 865.305.9753.
