Good for Your Heart Chocolate Recipe for Your Valentine

The guilty pleasures of chocolate actually have a healthy spin: improved vascular health. This Valentine’s Day surprise your sweetheart or friends with a chocolate delectable you don’t have to feel guilty about.

It is believed that dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa solids may be healthy for your heart. Cocoa contains antioxidants that may help prevent cholesterol from sticking to artery walls, thereby reducing the risk of heart attack or stroke.

One ounce of dark chocolate has approximately 150 calories, so enjoying this treat in moderation may improve heart health while helping maintain the waistline. However, milk chocolate and white chocolate contain more sugar and do not have the same nutritional benefits as dark chocolate.

This, of course, is not a license to consume as much chocolate as you can. As with most foods, moderation is key in maintaining a healthy weight and reaping the most nutritional benefits.

So whether you prefer chocolates, chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate cake or chocolate meringues, there are healthier recipes and healthier choices to please even the foremost chocolate connoisseur.
