A team of 17 volunteers from the University of Tennessee’s Green T Club brought the Healing Garden to life when they planted trees, shrubs and flowers. Green T, a student-run club within the horticultural program at the university, provided countless hours of assistance in planning the garden, ordering plants and finally planting the plants this past Saturday.
The Healing Garden, made possible through philanthropic gifts and in-kind donations from throughout the community, is the vision of Mrs. Maria Compere, a local community activist and garden enthusiast. Compere wanted a place of comfort and relaxation for the patients, families and staff at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Other supporters to the garden include ROSS/FOWLER, Ossoli Circle, Black Fox Farms and Stanley’s Nursery.
“Many departments came together to make the Healing Garden a reality," said Rick Giecek, chief development officer. "We especially are thankful to the Cancer Institute, Maintenance Department, Facilities Planning and landscaping teams for their support in making the garden a beautiful and tranquil place within our campus.”
Tribute bricks are part of the garden’s path and may be purchased by contacting the Development Office at 865.305.6611 or development@utmck.edu.
