May is better hearing and speech month

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, the month designated to raise awareness and promote treatment for communication disorders including hearing and speech impairments.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association estimates more than 14 million Americans have an identified hearing, speech, language or swallowing impairment. The National Institute on Deafness reports that as many as 43 million may actually have impairments that have never been diagnosed and treated. Even mild impairments may limit academic, social and career achievements.

Prognosis is improved with proper treatment.

Rehabilitation Services audiologists and speech-language pathologists assist with communication or swallowing needs.

Call the medical center’s Department of Rehabilitation Services at 305.9151 or 305.6630 for further information.
