Stroke: Acting FAST could save a life

In 1987, the National Stroke Association designated May as National Stroke Awareness Month with the purpose of raising public awareness of risk factors, symptoms and response to help reduce the impact and incidence of stroke.

The National Stroke Association wants the public to be aware of acting FAST. A person experiencing a stroke can be treated if people have acted FAST.

FAST is an acronym for things to check in a suspected stroke victim.

F - Face / Does the face droop on one side when the person smiles?
A - Arm / After raising both arms, does one arm drift downwards?
S - Speech /After repeating a simple phrase, is speech slurred or strange?
T - Time / If any or all of the above are observed call for 9-1-1 and ask for medical assistance.

The University of Tennessee Medical Center, the first certified Primary Stroke Center in the Knoxville region, was recently recertified by The Joint Commission. JCAHO primary stroke center certification recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care.
