Thomas Fields named director of surgery and perioperative services

Thomas Fields recently joined The University of Tennessee Medical Center as director of Surgery and Perioperative Services. Fields’ primary responsibility is to maintain a patient-centered and efficient Department of Surgery for the medical center and its patients.

Prior to joining UT Medical Center, Fields worked for five years as service line leader of Surgical Services for Mercy Health Partners. Fields also has experience in surgical and orthopedic services at hospitals in Monroe, N.C. and Seattle.

“I believe The University of Tennessee Medical Center has demonstrated an extremely high level of service to our community and it is an absolute honor to be a part of that service,” Fields said. Fields believes in a true team approach on behalf of the patients he and his staff members serve. “As a servant leader, as I interact with the staff and physicians, I remind myself that my success is dependent upon their success, which results in the best possible outcome for the patients.”

A nurse by background with 16 years of military service as a Captain in the United States Army Nurse Corps, Fields’ professional memberships include the Association of Operating Room Nurses, Tennessee Hospital Association and Tennessee Organization of Nurse Executives. In the process of completing his MBA from University of Phoenix, Fields earned, with honors, his Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, N.C. He received accreditation as a surgical technologist and earned an Associate’s degree from Piedmont Community College in Charlotte.

“Our entire team is very excited about bringing Thomas Fields into this key leadership role at the medical center,” said Gary Scott, vice president of Perioperative Services at UT Medical Center. “Thomas is passionate, he cares about our patients and he brings proven clinical and leadership experience that will help us as we continue to grow and make surgical advances.”

A resident of Halls, Fields enjoys spending his off-time volunteering in the community, spending time with his family, backpacking and mountaineering. Fields and his wife, Jonell, have four children, Bella, Colby, Charles and Sage. The family attends the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville.
