Maria Compere of West Knoxville is a true believer in flower power. It all started with planting daffodils along Pellissippi Parkway. Compere led the efforts that generated donations and time from many local community members and even state agencies in order to make the roadside look beautiful.
Now, Compere, 91, wants to use flower power for healing purposes. She is heading a project to create a healing garden at The University of Tennessee Medical Center. Compere’s vision for the garden - to be located in an outdoor space near the medical center’s Spice of Life Café - will include a fountain, benches and beautiful landscaping that will provide a place for cancer patients and their families to relax and heal.
Compere is now lobbying elected officials and businesses for financial assistance to make the project a reality. To donate to the construction of the healing garden, contact the Cancer Institute.
