Dr. Larry Kilgore returns home to practice at UT Medical Center

Nationally recognized gynecologic oncologist joins medical center’s Cancer Institute

East Tennessee native Dr. Larry Kilgore recently returned home to practice at The University of Tennessee Medical Center Cancer Institute. Kilgore, a gynecologic oncologist, moved back to Tennessee after practicing for 20 years at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB).

“We are privileged and excited that Dr. Kilgore chose to join our Cancer Institute team,” said Renee Hawk, vice president of the UT Medical Center Cancer Institute. “His experience and skill will enhance the care provided to women with gynecological cancers in our region.”

Kilgore, a University of Tennessee alumnus, graduated medical school at UT Memphis in 1980 and went on to complete his residency and fellowship at UAB. During his tenure on staff at UAB, Kilgore served as Fellowship Director for Gynecologic Oncology and Residency Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He also held the inaugural J. Max Austin Endowed Chair in Gynecologic Oncology.

“This is a call home for me,” Kilgore said. “It’s an honor for me to bring my knowledge and training to UT Medical Center. I have a yearning to build the gynecologic oncology services in East Tennessee. There are more people for me to help here, and I love caring for patients and teaching medical students. There are fascinating opportunities at UT Medical Center.”

Kilgore specializes in the prevention, detection and treatment of female cancers, which include the ovary, uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva. Skilled in robotic gynecologic cancer procedures, Kilgore serves as proctor for other surgeons in this minimally invasive technique that result in patients typically having shorter hospital stays, quicker recoveries, less pain and smaller incisions.

A nationally recognized surgeon, sought after speaker and educator, Kilgore is a Board Examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics/Gynecology including the subspecialty of Gynecologic Oncology. He is a long-standing member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists and the American College of Surgeons.

Kilgore and his wife, Trish, recently became empty nesters, as their three children are now all in college and graduate school. Passionate about music, Kilgore, an avid guitar player, introduced himself to many patients and staff at UT Medical Center through a guitar performance in the lobby of the Cancer Institute. He also enjoys running, golf and UT sports.
