Chili supper fundraiser helps BHOP bring mammograms to community

Oliver Springs Housing Authority (OSHA) had a Breast Health Education event on May 26, 2010 for their residents and community members, where 32 ladies attended. Mae King and Peggy Iachetta from the Breast Health Outreach Program at the University of Tennessee Medical Center’s Cancer Institute presented the program. They offered a free breast health education class focusing on screening guidelines, warning signs of breast cancer, and proper technique for breast self-exams utilizing MammaCare® breast models.

Eighty women including Oliver Springs Housing Authority residents and members of the community received their digital screening mammogram on UT Medical Center’s mobile mammography unit.

Oliver Springs Housing Authority’s Executive Director, Juanita Blasingame, and Community Cares member, Amanda Miller with the help from OSHA staff and community members held a “Chili Supper” fundraiser. The $505 proceeds were donated to UT Medical Center, Cancer Institute’s Outreach Programs, which offer education and preventative cancer screenings in 21 East Tennessee counties.
