Emergency and Trauma Services is the only Level I Trauma Center in the area and serves as the tertiary referral center for medical care in East Tennessee, serving Knox County and 21 surrounding counties.

In The US News and World Report America's Best Hospitals Special Issue, The University of Tennessee Medical Center's Stroke Center was recognized by the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association for turning guidelines into lifelines. UT Medical Center is the only hospital in Knoxville to receive the American Heart Association’s Get With the Guidelines Gold Award.
Representatives from the American Heart Association (AHA) were at the University of Tennessee Medical Center on Aug. 25 to present the Get With the Guidelines (GWTG) Gold Award to the Stroke Center. Recipients of the Gold Award have demonstrated 24 months of compliance in at least 85% of all eligible stroke measures.
On hand to present the award from AHA were Mary Robichaux, vice president of Quality Initiatives for the Southeast Region; and Kim Nickels, director for Quality Improvement Initiatives. Dr. John Beuerlein, Stroke Center Medical Director; Jennifer Henry RN; Hugh Jarnigan RN; Brenda Law RN; and Theronne Singletary SLP received the award on behalf of the Stroke Center.
UT Medical Center was 1 of only 2 Tennessee hospitals to receive the Gold Award.
